Storm Frank brought exceptionally wet and windy weather to Scotland at the end of last year. On the 28th December the heavy rain overwhelmed the roof of our Woodside Library at the main dome and severe water penetration caused the internal plasterwork to collapse.
The building had to be closed to the public that day while the damage was examined. There remains a danger of further collapse, and it appears that the waterproofing already attempted around the dome will not suffice. A substantial reconstruction of the 100 year old structure may be the only solution, and this is not likely to proceed before April 2016.
In the meantime the adult lending area will remain closed, but much of the stock of adult and ethnic books and some computers have been resited by Glasgow Life library staff into the children’s area, which is undamaged and safe to use. This means the library is again open and these temporary arrangements including rotation of the lending stock will allow the library to function while repair works are organised.
